Exploring Various Battery Technologies: AGM, Gel, Lead Acid, and Lithium

Batteries are an integral part of our modern lives, powering everything from our backup or solar systems to electric vehicles, smart devices etc. . As technology continues to evolve, different battery technologies have emerged to cater to varying needs, whether it’s for backup power, mobility, or high energy density applications. In this article, we’ll delve into four prominent battery technologies: AGM, Gel, Lead Acid, and Lithium.   1. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) Batteries: AGM batteries are a type of lead-acid battery that employs absorbent glass mats to hold the battery’s…

Types of Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium-ion uses a cathode (positive electrode), an anode (negative electrode) and electrolyte as conductor. (The anode of a discharging battery is negative and the cathode positive (see BU-104b: Battery Building Blocks). The cathode is metal oxide and the anode consists of porous carbon. During discharge, the ions flow from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte and separator; charge reverses the direction and the ions flow from the cathode to the anode. Figure 1 illustrates the process. Figure 1: Ion flow in lithium-ion battery. When the cell charges and discharges, ions…

Why lithium-ion is a superior battery system.

Pioneering work of the lithium battery began in 1912 under G.N. Lewis, but it was not until the early 1970s that the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially available. Attempts to develop rechargeable lithium batteries followed in the 1980s but failed because of instabilities in the metallic lithium used as anode material. (The metal-lithium battery uses lithium as anode; Li-ion uses graphite as anode and active materials in the cathode.) Lithium is the lightest of all metals, has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the largest specific energy per weight.…

Lithium Golf Trolley Batteries – Questions & Answers

Q: Are these batteries compatible with standard lead acid charger? A: Batteries must ONLY BE CHARGED WITH CHARGER SUPPLIED. It’s not possible to charge the battery properly using any other charger.   Q: Are lithium batteries dangerous? A: No! Batteries are from LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) which is the safest type of lithium rechargeable batteries.   Q: How to connect to my Golf Trolley A: Batteries are designed for use on a wide-range of electrical trolley using various connection types. We offer an Anderson & T Bar as an option.…

What are the advantages of buying a Lithium Ion Battery for your golf trolley?

Lead acid batteries are made from a mixture of lead plates and sulfuric acid. Lithium ion batteries on the other hand are a much newer invention, and have only been around in a commercially viable form since the 1980’s. Lithium technology has become well proven and understood for its long shelf life and is widely used for several appliances and products. 1. Superior “Useable” Capacity Unlike with lead acid batteries, it is considered practical to regularly use 90% or more of the rated capacity of a lithium battery bank, and…
